A turn-based campaign is different from real-time base building
Total War: plan across worlds, then fight on the ground
The galactic campaign combines turn-based expansion, planet capture, fleet upgrades and a war economy with real-time ground battles. Creative Assembly / SEGA ↗
The distinction is between the wider strategic layer and an individual battle. A clip of infantry fighting does not show the whole galactic campaign. Read the campaign and map briefing for the announced scales, then use the official campaign development replay to see the selected presentation.
Dawn of War IV: bases, resource points and squads
Dawn of War IV’s official overview describes classic real-time strategy with base construction, resource-point control, squad weapon and ability upgrades, and unit veterancy. It advertises over 70 campaign missions; that count does not establish campaign playtime. Deep Silver / KING Art ↗
Base construction and resource-point control are part of the official RTS description. That is a different emphasis from Total War’s announced turn-based expansion layer. It does not mean Total War lacks an economy, or that every Dawn of War mission follows an identical structure.
Deep Silver’s Back to War trailer breakdown describes missions appearing across the territories of Dawn of War IV’s world map, with players choosing which mission to tackle and some choices having consequences. That campaign decision layer should not be confused with Total War’s announced turn-based galactic sandbox. Deep Silver / KING Art ↗
Dawn of War IV therefore also has decisions between battles. The useful distinction is the type of campaign structure, rather than suggesting that one game has strategy and the other only has combat.
Do not use rules from Dawn of War I, II or III to fill gaps in IV. Similarly, Warhammer III’s campaign mechanics do not automatically transfer to Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000.
Which preview answers your question?
- “I want to see planetary strategy and a campaign map.” Watch the official Total War Gamescom Alpha Strike at 21:15 ↗ for the planet-to-system explanation; use the map briefing for its development scope.
- “I want to see a long battle with developer explanations.” Use Total War’s Ranged Combat Alpha Strike.
- “I want to understand bases, resources and squad upgrades.” Watch the Dawn of War IV Orks vs Necrons 1v1 Battlefield Report ↗. The publisher’s match introduction ↗ explains what it shows. For base construction and world-map choices, read the official Back to War trailer breakdown ↗; its edited in-engine trailer is a different format from a match.
- “I want to create my own Total War army identity.” Read the chapter editor and army painter explanation.
Deep Silver presents the Orks-versus-Necrons Battlefield Report as an advanced 1v1 Annihilation match between its creative director and QA lead, including configurable match settings and ongoing development changes. It is a useful developer-presented battle preview, not final balance evidence. Deep Silver / KING Art ↗

Questions before mixing up the two games
Are Dawn of War IV and Total War 40K the same game?
No. They are separate products from different development and publishing teams. Both use the Warhammer 40,000 setting, but the shared setting does not imply shared campaigns, units, saves or multiplayer servers.
Dawn of War IV is developed by KING Art and published by Deep Silver. Its Steam Features section lists Single-player, Online PvP and Online Co-op. Those categories do not by themselves establish every cooperative mode or player limit. KING Art / Deep Silver ↗
Does Dawn of War IV having Online Co-op confirm co-op for Total War?
KING Art’s announcement describes four full single-player/co-op campaigns, one for each Dawn of War IV faction, with non-linear decisions feeding an overarching narrative. This confirms announced campaign co-op for Dawn of War IV, not for Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. KING Art ↗
Each game needs its own announcement. Dawn of War IV has a specific campaign-co-op announcement beyond its Steam category; the cited announcement does not settle all session controls, saving rules or player limits. That cannot establish campaign co-op for Total War. Use the Total War multiplayer status table for its platform listings, eight-player PS5 wording and current open questions.
Do “70+ missions” and a galactic sandbox tell me which game is longer?
No. A mission count and a sandbox description are different measures. Neither establishes how many hours your campaign will take. Difficulty, final campaign rules and the way you play would need their own evidence.
Should I expect the same factions or army builder?
Do not assume either. Check the Total War launch list and each game’s official material separately. An announced custom-army feature also does not make this website an army editor or validate a particular loadout.
